Carvacrol activated biopolymeric foam: An effective packaging system to control the development of spoilage and pathogenic bacteria on sliced pumpkin…

2021

Abstract A commercial biodegradable starch-based polymer (Mater-Bi) was activated with carvacrol to develop a biodegradable and compostable polymer to be used in food packaging. Based on previous tests, carvacrol was added at 20 % weight of foam. MB foams, with and without carvacrol, were tested for their morphological characteristics, mechanical tests and kinetics of carvacrol release under refrigerated storage conditions. Carvacrol slightly increased the porosity of the foams, induced a reduction of the compressive elastic modulus (Ecom) of foamed MB from 6 to ∼ 3.4 MPa and a decrease of the tensile elastic modulus from ∼70 MPa to ∼16.5 MPa. Carvacrol release from the foam at 4 °C was alm…

From Norway Spruce Bark to Carbon Foams : Characterization, and Applications

2020

Fresh bark from spruce Picea abies was milled and extracted with hot water. The extracts were purified in a number of steps in order to get tannin-extracts pure enough to prepare tannin-based carbon foams. The chemical composition of the extracts were analyzed. The foams were maturated and thermally treated to obtain desired properties, such as specific surface area, porosity, and compressive strength. It was possible to produce carbon foams even if they contained carbohydrate impurities. Differences in the properties of the carbon foams such as compressive strength, specific surface areas, and pore size distributions might be related to the compositions of the extracts. The foams were fina…

Impact of a new carrageenan-based vaginal microbicide in a female population with genital HPV-infection: First experimental results

2019

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess safety, satisfaction, and anti- viral effect of a new carrageenan-based vaginal microbicide in a population of fertile female patients with genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty healthy and sexually active women aged 18-45 years with genital HPV infection were enrolled. Each subject was treated with a gel formulated with 0.02% carrageenan and Propionibacterium extract (CGP) (Carvir, Depofarma SpA, Mogliano Veneto, Treviso, Italy). The subjects were evaluated at baseline, after the I cycle of therapy and after the II cycle. At final status, treatment acceptability and satisfaction were evaluated using a …

On the Finite Element Simulation of Secondary Operations on Metallic Foams

2007

Metallic foams have been recently introduced also as industrial materials due to their well known advantages. In fact, their low mass in conjunction with the good thermal and mechanical properties push toward an extensive diffusion in manufacturing industry. In the study here addressed, a very accurate investigation concerning the latter two aspects has been carried out. In fact, a secondary manufacturing process, i.e. the foam bending, has been taken into account. Anyway, all the knowledge derived for sheet metal bending is not directly applicable to the foams. A finite element code has been utilized for modeling the foam behavior during the bending processes and an accurate material rheol…

Cold recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavements

2018

Pavement engineers have in front of them multiple challenges linked to addressing issues related to social development and society’s expanding needs. One of the most substantial of these issues is perhaps how to effectively rehabilitate and/ or maintain the existing road network while preserving and sustaining limited natural resources. The re-usage of existing pavement materials to reconstruct/ rehabilitate our future pavements is the solution that is now more and more selected by the different road administrations around the world. However, upon closer inspection, one can find many areas and details, not negligible issues, that are simply extensions of HMA technology (i.e. mix design proc…

Antibacterial biopolymeric foams: Structure–property relationship and carvacrol release kinetics

2019

Abstract In this work, the feasibility of antibacterial biopolymeric foams containing carvacrol (CRV) for potential food packaging applications was investigated. Sodium bicarbonate (SB) was chosen as foaming agent and a commercial biodegradable polymer, Mater-Bi® (MB), as a matrix. MB/SB and MB/SB/CRV systems were prepared by melt mixing and the foaming process was conducted in a laboratory press. The influence of foaming agent and antibacterial additive content was investigated. The foamed samples were characterized through morphological analysis, mechanical tests and measurements of CRV release kinetics. Moreover, a mathematical model, i.e. power law model, was used to fit the release dat…

Conversion of furfural to 2-methylfuran over CuNi catalysts supported on biobased carbon foams

2021

In this study, carbon foams prepared from the by-products of the Finnish forest industry, such as tannic acid and pine bark extracts, were examined as supports for 5/5% Cu/Ni catalysts in the hydrotreatment of furfural to 2-methylfuran (MF). Experiments were conducted in a batch reactor at 503 K and 40 bar H2. Prior to metal impregnation, the carbon foam from tannic acid was activated with steam (S1), and the carbon foam from pine bark extracts was activated with ZnCl2 (S2) and washed with acids (HNO3 or H2SO4). For comparison, a spruce-based activated carbon (AC) catalyst and two commercial AC catalysts as references were investigated. Compressive strength of the foam S2 was 30 times great…
